I come from a family with high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, obesity, glaucoma; you name it and my family had it. I was told that the illnesses were hereditary and a part of getting older. Like many people, I did not have a clue that the food and lifestyle played such a vital role causing havoc on the mind and body. I was programmed to believe dairy (milk & cheese) was good for developing strong bones and meat was good for protein, so eat up. I remember eating those wonderful collard greens with pork. Too bad they were overcooked thereby depleting the enzymes and nutrition. I was on the same course that most people were on called the Standard American Diet which was indeed (SAD).
In my late 30’s, I started feeling pain and heaviness in my lower abdomen. The doctor told me I had fibroids and recommended surgery. Concern and fear invaded my mind because I had never heard of fibroids. Knowledge that I needed started to flow in my direction. A friend recommended to a Naturopath Practitioner named Elon Bomani. She put me on a cleanse and guided me towards a plant based lifestyle. The fibroids started to shrink, my cycle normalized and the pain went away. I became extremely excited and chose to bypass surgery. Information continued to flow and I was introduced to a support group called African Americans for Balanced Health (AABH) which has had a major impact on my life. There were many books I read but the two that had an impact on me were “Lick the Sugar Habit” “by Nancy Appleton and “African Holistic Health” by Llaila O. Afrika.
Life has been a continuous journey filled with on-going wondrous changes and delights. I partake daily in eating healthy, feeding and relaxing my mind and listening to my inner voice within me.
